Don Miguel Ruiz’s visit to NYC
Don Miguel Ruiz
This posting is a supplement to the 5th agreement. Don Miguel Ruiz and family visited last year on May 13, 2009. I was fortunate enough to attend two days of his lectures. I wrote this post last year and is actually two posts, one for each evening.

I spent an enchanted evening with Don Miguel Ruiz, the notable author of The Four Agreements, Mastery of Love, The Voice of Knowledge and The Prayers.
Don Miguel Ruiz’s teachings are so simple yet profound. I came upon the realization that his teachings are common sense and easy enough to understand to apply it in my life. Some of his teachings that he brought up that evening were:
1.) Don’t believe other people
2.) Don’t believe in yourself, but learn to listen
3.) Accept yourself. You are perfect. Perfection has nothing to do with judgment but by being alive, being in the moment, and enjoying as is.
Don Miguel Ruiz with his daughter, Kimberly
May 14, 2009
It came as a surprise that Don Miguel Ruiz, his son, Don Miguel Ruiz Jr, Eva Charlotte and Kimberly, Don Miguel Ruiz’s stepdaughter came back the next day for another inspirational talk. Don Miguel’s public appearances are very intimate with the crowd of people. He had us sit closer to him than to have a formal like seminar setting. I enjoyed the evening before but this evening was much more deeper and meaningful to me.
I especially enjoyed Kimberly’s talk about happiness. She described herself as always having this public image of herself, with her clothes and make-up. She thought if she made herself look beautiful on the outside, then people will love her. She realized her appearance to others was not her authentic self and she was not happy on the inside. Kimberly became Don Miguel’s apprentice and learned about unconditional love. She learned to love herself unconditionally. In the beginning of her apprenticeship, Don Miguel just smiled at her and said to her, “Love yourself”. She thought he meant she had to buy herself flowers, take herself out on a date, or to physically kiss herself. But as she learned more and more as Don Miguel’s apprentice, she learned about unconditional love. She realized that it is about loving herself without conditions, with all her flaws whether it is physical or emotional flaws. In the beginning of her apprenticeship, Kimberly thought someone was going to love her because she was a lot happier, but in the end the person who loved her the most was herself.
As Kimberly spoke, I resonated with her story with my own. And you at some point in your life, can relate. I spent a lot of money on clothes, shoes, and make-up to look beautiful on the outside. After many self-reflections, I realized I needed to love myself unconditionally first. And that was when I knew I was evolving as a spiritual being.
